Research tools

At MITEI, we have developed a unique and powerful set of energy system analysis and optimization tools. These tools let users understand the economic and climate impacts of different energy pathways against the complex backdrop of the energy system as a whole.

DECARB

DECARB, released in 2026, is a modular optimization tool for building-level decarbonization and energy management. This tool supports a broad range of stakeholders evaluating how buildings fit into their decarbonization and energy strategies.

HyCAT

HyCAT (Hydrogen Carrier Analysis Tool), released in 2026, estimates the cost and greenhouse gas emissions for long distance hydrogen shipping via hydrogen carriers.

Macro

Macro (also known as MacroEnergy.jl) is a planning tool specially designed for utility planners, regulators, and researchers who are trying to understand how electricity grids and other energy sectors might co-evolve given new technologies, policies, and ways of using electricity and energy-intensive commodities. Released in 2025, it is an update to the GenX and DOLPHYN tools.

DOLPHYN

DOLPHYN (Decision Optimization of Low-Carbon Power and Hydrogen Networks) is an energy system optimization tool developed to explore interactions between various energy sectors as new policies and technologies are deployed. Released in 2021, it uses the same core architecture as GenX but also includes hydrogen, carbon, biofuels, and fossil and synthetic fuels.

GenX

GenX is a tool to optimize the design and operations of electricity grids. First released in 2017, it supports a wide range of electricity policies and technologies, offering improved decision-support capabilities for policy makers, utilities, and researchers.

SESAME

SESAME (Sustainable Energy System Analysis Modeling Environment) is a novel energy analysis and lifecycle assessment tool first released in 2020 to assess the system-level greenhouse gas emissions of the evolving energy system. While the open-source tool is no longer updated, the commercial version of the tool is available from Sesame Sustainability.
