MIT’s legacy of tackling societal challenges by applying leading-edge science and technology stretches back to its first classes offered in 1865. Some of MIT’s greatest innovations have been multidisciplinary, stemming from collaborations across MIT departments and among industry, academia, and government. Throughout its history, MIT has engaged with industry and government to help solve the world’s most vexing problems.
The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) builds on this legacy. Since our founding, we have worked with energy, grid, heavy industry, technology, and other companies to address the universal need for reliable, affordable, secure, and sustainable energy. By focusing MIT’s world-leading expertise in science, engineering, economics, and policy on energy-related topics, we have advanced the energy transition; produced influential reports on the future of energy technologies; spawned startup companies; and educated a generation of students who have become leaders in industry, academia, and government.
Since 2006, we have deployed nearly $1 billion in funding, sponsored more than 3,000 graduate students and postdocs and 1,100 undergraduate research projects, educated more than 150,000 global learners through online courses, and been linked to more than 60 startup companies. We seek technology and policy solutions to advance the energy transition and ensure energy security; widespread access to affordable, reliable, clean energy; and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
