Growing up in Lebanon and experiencing power crises firsthand, Jad saw how critical battery energy storage is to the viability of solar-powered electricity. As a part of his MITEI Energy UROP, Jad tested recycling and rejuvenation methods for lithium-ion batteries, advancing the development of less wasteful, more efficient energy storage systems.

As a part of her MITEI Energy UROP, Penelope Swain analyzed how solar energy and EV adoption impacts the energy burden of low- and middle-income communities in the United States, developing an interactive map to help policy makers evaluate incentive programs.
