Decarbonization policy, Energy security, Electrification, Energy modeling, Tariff design, Energy systems integration

Pablo Duenas-Martinez is a research scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative and assistant professor at Universidad Pontificia Comillas. His research integrates economic and regulatory modeling with analysis of how traditional and emerging generation technologies shape energy systems of the future within a carbon-constrained world. His work spans liberalization and regulation of gas and electricity markets, energy security and resilience in decarbonizing economies, the integration of distributed energy resources, planning and regulatory frameworks for universal energy access, and mathematical modeling of energy systems. This research has direct policy and operational relevance—he has advised energy companies, government agencies, and regulatory bodies on projects aimed at improving investments and operations across energy systems worldwide.

His funding portfolio includes grants from major U.S. agencies (NSF and ARPA-E), the European Commission, and private research contracts. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications, conference papers, technical reports, and book chapters, and has been invited as an expert to workshops by institutions including the Inter-American Development Bank and the International Energy Agency. He holds a BS in industrial engineering, an MS in electric power systems, and PhD in electrical engineering from Universidad Pontificia Comillas, and a BS in economics from the National Distance Education University in Madrid, Spain.
